DESERT CENTER, Calif. — The primary highway from Los Angeles to Phoenix was harmed by a flash flood that cleaned out part of the roadway through the Southern California desert in the newest bout of penalizing monsoonal thunderstorms that have strike the area this summertime.

The latest round of flooding began Wednesday night, damaging a road that was part of a detour past a repairwork task along eastbound Interstate 10 near the little neighborhood of Desert Center, about 165 miles (265 km) east of Los Angeles.
