China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation (Sinopec) has exposed that the world’s biggest LNG storage tank was put into operation at its Qingdao LNG getting terminal in China.
The building of the tank with a storage capability of 270,000 cubic meters started in early 2022 and it was put into service on November 2, 2023.
According to Sinopec, it will include 165 million cubic meters of storage capability to satisfy the gas need of 2.16 million families for 5 months throughout the winterseason heating season, which will improve and assurance the natural gas supply in North China.
The LNG storage tank, which is a secret job of Qingdao LNG getting terminal’s stage III buildingandconstruction, was separately created, established, and developed by Sinopec, including a size of 100.6 meters and a height of 55 meters.

On the verysame day, Sinopec’s Tianjin LNG getting terminal finished the stage II buildingandconstruction with 3 220,000-cubic-meter storage tanks coming into complete service. This includes over 400 million cubic meters of natural gas saving capability to bring the overall storage capability of Tianjin terminal to 1.08 billion cubic meters, the biggest in China.
Sinopec’s 2 LNG terminals in Qingdao and Tianjin, with 7 and 9 storage tanks respectively, have a overall of 1.68 billion cubic meters of storage capability.
Looking ahead, Sinopec intends to construct more natural gas storage depots and LNG getting terminals in China to evenmore enhance the natural gas storage and peak gas usage modification abilities and broaden LNG storage capabilities throughout its five-year strategy.
