Attorneys state 2 Mississippi catfish farms have settled a claim over utilizing immigrant employees and paying them more than they paid regional Black farmworkers

JACKSON, Miss. — Two Mississippi catfish farms have settled a claim declaring that they brought employees from Mexico to the U.S. and paid them substantially more than they formerly paid regional Black farmworkers for the verysame type of labor, complainants’ lawyers stated Tuesday.
Southern Migrant Legal Services and Mississippi Center for Justice tooklegalactionagainst Jerry Nobile, his boy Will Nobile and their farms in August on behalf of 14 Black farmworkers. The federal claim stated the Black employees were “systematically underpaid and rejected task chances for years in favor of non-Black foreign employees” at Nobile Fish Farms, which likewise raise corn and soybeans.
The complainants’ lawyers stated the suit concluded on “mutually reasonable terms” under a personal settlement.
