The roof of a school double-decker bus was ripped off when it struck a low bridge

An eight-year-old boy suffered a “nasty cut to the head” when the roof of a double-decker school bus was ripped off when it hit a low bridge.

The bus was carrying pupils from Wood Fold Primary School in Standish, Wigan, when it crashed on Spendmore Lane in Coppull, Lancashire, at about 12: 30 GMT.

Lancashire Police said everyone on board was taken safely off the bus and about 30 children were assessed at the scene by paramedics.

The boy was taken to hospital but North West Ambulance Service said the rest of the children had all been discharged from its care.
