BRUSSELS — Former Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich lost in his legal effort to reverse sanctions slapped by the European Union for his function in Russia’s intrusion of Ukraine, with an EU court dismissing his claim Wednesday.
Abramovich had submitted a claim at the EU’s basic court versus the European Union Council, which enforced penalty on the 57-year-old oligarch in 2022 as part of steps targeting Russia and President Vladimir Putin’s close allies.
“The General Court dismisses the action brought by Mr Abramovich, consequently maintaining the limiting steps taken versus him,” the court stated Wednesday. “The Council did not in truth err in its evaluation by choosing to consistof then keep Mr Abramovich’s name on the lists at problem, in the light of his function in the Evraz group and, in specific, its momsanddad business.”
