Mercedes had their worst race of 2023, Lewis Hamilton endingup 8th and George Russell retiring when running 11th. It was an unwanted surprise for the previous champs after the group felt they hadactually been making development in current races with an updated flooring. Verstappen’s win was copybook after a quick obstacle from Norris in the opening laps. But the star of the race was perhaps Alonso, with a skillful protective drive versus Perez and then some exceptional race-craft to recover the position after losing it on the penultimate lap. Perez was within a 2nd of Alonso, and forthatreason with usage of the DRS surpassing help, with 16 laps to go. But Alonso kept a quicker automobile behind him by smart driving, picking ingenious lines through corners and assessing his rate simply right at the secret points of the track to guarantee Perez was neverever rather able to get by. As the race went into its last 3 laps, it appeared as if Alonso was going to hold on, just for Perez to make a worthy last effort and pass him into Turn One on the penultimate lap.
