The Category A listed building has remained unused for more than 50 years, despite a number of proposals for its future use.

The planned creation of the National Centre for Music marks the first time these ambitions will be realised with the signing of this contract representing a significant milestone in the building’s history, formally signalling the commencement of its future.

Main construction works will now advance following a year of enabling works already carried out by Robertson to assess the structure.

Main works will run through to spring 2028, with the National Centre for Music due to open in early summer 2028.

The scheme will restore and adapt the building to deliver three performance spaces, rehearsal rooms, a recording studio, learning facilities, café, conference and event space, plus public landscaped gardens overlooking the city.

Robertson will carry out extensive heritage works including roofing, stonework, cornicing and plumbing, alongside specialist packages for staging, lighting and acoustics. Around three-quarters of the subcontract supply chain will be Scottish-based.

Once complete, the venue is expected to become a national cultural destination, returning one of Edinburgh’s most recognisable buildings to active public use after decades lying empty.
