#Thrifting is trending—and why not? Scoring an absolutely amazing used find for a fraction of the price of a brand-new piece of furniture is the ultimate get: affordable, sustainable, and often one-of-a-kind. And there’s more good news. No matter where you live, you’ll find shops curated with the finest midcentury investment pieces; affordable vintage stores filled with quirky finds; consignment and resale stores offering contemporary pieces at significantly discounted prices; and anything-goes spots like flea markets and thrift stores with mind-blowing bargains. We’ve included all of these in our guide to buying used furniture in every state. Ready to get shopping? Read on—or skip ahead to find the places to furnish your house affordably in your region.

  • New England: Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont
  • Mid-Atlantic: Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania
  • Southeast: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia
  • Southwest: Arizona, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas
  • Midwest: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, Wisconsin
  • The Rocky Mountains: Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Utah, Wyoming
  • Pacific Coastal: Alaska, California, Hawaii, Oregon, Washington

But first, a few notes:

  • We tried to limit the number of “malls” or “markets,” emporiums filled with scores of independent vendors, as pricing can be steep and generally you’ll find less furniture.
  • As one might expect, the nicer the store and the merchandise, the higher the prices, but even at the top of our pricing range, we tried to keep things relatively affordable. So if you don’t see your favorite midcentury modern furniture store on this list, it’s probably because it’s catering to a crowd that has at least $3,000 to spend on a single chair. (One can dream.)
  • Finally, remember that calling something an “antique” can sometimes just be a way to charge more, so don’t be afraid to bargain a bit.
