India and Canada launched negotiations for a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) on Monday in New Delhi, aiming to finalise the deal soon. The Terms of Reference (ToR) for the agreement were signed by India’s Commerce and Industry Minister, Piyush Goyal, and Canada’s Minister of International Trade, Maninder Sidhu. The documents were exchanged in the presence of India’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, and Canada’s Prime Minister, Mark Carney, at Hyderabad House.
The ToR will provide the format, frequency, and approach for the CEPA negotiations. In a statement, the Commerce Ministry said the framework will serve as a guide to facilitate an ambitious, balanced, and mutually beneficial agreement.
