May 19 (UPI) — Xander Schauffele rimmed in a 6-foot putt to win his veryfirst significant title in walk-off style, edging Bryson DeChambeau by one stroke at the 2024 PGA Championship on Sunday at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Ky.
The birdie finished a four-round overall of 21-under, setting the record for the finest rating at a significant competition. Schauffele, who gotin the day connected for the lead with Collin Morikawa, made 7 birdies in his final-round of 6-under65
“I was kinda psychological after the putt lipped in,” Schauffele stated on the CBS broadcast. “It’s been a while consideringthat I’ve won. I truly kept stating all week that i simply requirement to stay in my lane.
“Man was it difficult to stay in my lane today.”
Schauffele held off intense competitors from Viktor Hovland, Sahith Theegala and DeChambeau throughout the round.
DeChambeau completed his round as the co-leader and was preparing for a playoff before Schauffele was able to claim the Wanamaker Trophy — and a $3.3 million first-place reward — with his significant birdie.
DeChambeau was 7-under over his last 18 holes. Hovland, who carded a 5-under 66, positioned 3rd at 18-under for the tourney. Morikawa, who was even par on Sunday, connected for 4th with Thomas Detry at 15-under through 72 holes.
Tournament favorite Scottie Scheffler, who was apprehended Friday on his method to the 2nd round and launched in time to play it, endedup his eventful week with a final-round rating of 6-und
