BRASILIA, Brazil — Brazilian beef was headed back to the racks of Carrefour-owned grocery shops Tuesday after a short boycott triggered by remarks from the French business’s chief executive about countries in the South America trade bloc Mercosur.
Carrefour CEO Alexandre Bompard askedforgiveness to Brazil’s Ministry of Agriculture for social media posts in which he stated that Mercosur countries had an unreasonable competitive benefit due to lower ecological and hygienic requirements. Bompard was lookingfor to program assistance for French farmers outraged over a prospective trade offer with the bloc, which consistsof Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay.
“We understand that Brazilian farming supplies topquality meat, complies with guidelines and provides excellent taste. If Carrefour France’s interaction triggered confusion and might haveactually been translated as questioning our collaboration with Brazilian farming or as a criticism of it, we askforgiveness,” Bompard composed.
