COLOMBO, Sri Lanka — Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin was the visitor of honor at Sri Lanka’s 76th Independence Day events on Sunday, as the island country hasahardtime to emerge from its worst financial crisis.

Srettha signedupwith Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe at a subtle event near the nation’s primary seaside esplanade that consistedof a military parade and parachute leaps. The vacation celebrates Sri Lanka’s self-reliance from British guideline in 1948.

Sri Lanka stated personalbankruptcy in April 2022 with more than $83 billion in financialobligation, more than half of it to foreign lenders. The financial turmoil led to a political crisis that required then-President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to resign in2022 The parliament then chosen Wickremesinghe as president.

Srettha showedup in Sri Lanka on Saturday and the 2 nations signed a complimentary trade contract intending to increase trade and financialinvestment.
