The Chiefs may be low on folks’ radar in early September, but they should be hungrier than ever to resume their dynasty after an abrupt pause, courtesy of the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX.
We believe Patrick Mahomes remains the best player in the sport, even if other top-notch passers are winning the MVP award. In fact, the loss to the Eagles might’ve perfectly refocused Kansas City on the prize.
NFL.com’s Eric Edholm noted on the Chiefs before the season began: “For all the talk about his downslide, I’ll let someone else bet against Mahomes. He is about to turn 30 years old, and the Chiefs have finished atop the AFC West in all seven of his seasons as a starter.”
“In fact, Andy Reid is going for his 10th straight division title. There will be more threats within the division, and there’s no question the Chiefs benefited from some close shaves last season, but I can’t in good conscience write them off as title contenders.”
NFC Champion: San Francisco 49ers
The Eagles probably won’t make it back to February. The Detroit Lions always choke. The Washington Commanders could regress if 2024 were too good to be true. The Green Bay Packers, outside of Micah Parsons, don’t have a to-die-for depth chart. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have an NFC Championship ceiling. And Matthew Stafford is battling a mysterious back ailment.
