LONDON — Microsoft’s multibillion-dollar financialinvestment in ChatGPT-maker OpenAI might trigger a European Union merger examination, the bloc’s executive branch stated Tuesday.

The European Commission stated it’s “checking whether Microsoft’s financialinvestment in OpenAI may be reviewable” under guidelines covering mergers and acquisitions that would damage competitors in the 27-nation EU.
