Scientists find effort to contaminate leading Egyptian opposition politicalleader with Predator spyware

BOSTON — A leading Egyptian opposition politicalleader was targeted with spyware after revealing a governmental quote, security scientists reported Friday. They stated Egyptian authorities were mostlikely behind the tried hack.

Discovery of the effort last week by scientists at Citizen Lab and Google’s Threat Analysis Group triggered Apple to rush out operating system updates for iPhones, iPads, Mac computersystems and Apple Watches to spot the associated vulnerabilities.

Citizen Lab stated in a blogsite post that current efforts to hack previous Egyptian legislator Ahmed Altantawy included settingup his connection to the Vodaphone Egypt mobile network to immediately contaminate his gadgets with the Predator spyware if he wentto specific sites not utilizing the safeandsecure HTTPS procedure.

Bill Marczak, the scientist included at the University of Toronto-based web guarddog, decreased to offer more information on how he and Google scientist Maddie Stone found the spyware makeuseof chain, which he stated was sentout to Altantawy’s phone through SMS and WhatsApp links from Egyptian soil.
