The Gaza Man: A Palestinian’s mission to make it to the Olympics

Before every weight-lifting competitors, Mohammed Hamada believes of Gaza.

He believes of the damage of his home and individuals, or of the mass tomb he dug for citizens of the structure next to his.

Career on the increase

Mohammed comes from a household of weightlifters.

His nieces and nephews all getinvolved in the sport and his older sibling, Hussam, has qualified him for years as Palestine’s nationwide weightlifting coach.

At simply 18, Mohammed made history as the veryfirst Palestinian Olympic weightlifter at the Tokyo 2020 Games.

He then won gold at the 2022 International Weightlifting Federation Junior World Championships in Greece.

Mohammed’s profession was taking off, however Israel’s war on Gaza, start on October 7 after a Hamas-led attack on southern Israel, jolted him straight back down to earth.

The ‘passage of death’

Even as rockets and rockets drizzled down on their Gaza area of Tuffah, Hussam continued to coach his sibling.

Lifting weight-lifting bars inside harmed structures, the set did what they could.

“Resources are not what make a champ. It’s the scenarios that make a champ,” Mohammed mentioned.

But even with their continuous preparation, it wasn’t till early 2024 that the Hamadas made the choice to shot and make it to the Olympics.

Their dad recommended they shot to leave Gaza, and Hussam and Mohammed set off for the Rafah crossing with Egypt.

“Leaving the home was like going to a funeral,” Hussam, who left behind a partner and 3 kids aged 13, 11 and 6, stated.

“Tareq – he hugged me and he didn’t let go,” Hussam stated of his youngest kid. “Jude and Khamis were sobbing.”

Despite the weight of Hussam’s choice to leave, he feels assured understanding he has his household’s assistance.

“I feel bad and dream I hadn’t left them however they think in what we’re doing, in the Olympic dream, and in Mohammed,” Hussam stated.

“The Olympic journey is not simply Mohammed’s dream however the dream of the entire household.”

For nearly a month, the Hamada siblings waited in Rafah for news that would bring their dream one action closer – approval from the Egyptian federalgovernment to leave war-torn Gaza.

After 23 days of waiting, the verification incredibly came through.

Even when Mohammed was out of Gaza, certifying for the Paris Olympics would be tough.
