Think of him as the bar bouncer: Mr Gove’s statement on Thursday intends to develop a rigorous door policy for who gets gainaccessto to federalgovernment. If your name is on that list, you’re not getting in. Anyone identified as an extremist will be disallowed from conference ministers, assisting to shape public policy or lookingfor public funds. Mr Gove informed MPs he was driven to action since the UK’s worths were “under obstacle” from extremist groups, which were radicalising young individuals. But this is not a brand-new strategy. For 20 years, a succession of federalgovernments have attempted to specify and, at times, restriction extremism. Tony Blair was the veryfirst, after the 2005 terrorist battles of London. David Cameron twotimes guaranteed an extremism restriction. Each time, the federalgovernment hasactually dealtwith the exactsame intellectual and legal issue: noone concurs what the word indicates. Terrorism is really plainly specified in British law as the usage or risk of violence to daunt federalgovernment or society to follow a specific course in the name of an ideological cause. But extremism is not a criminalactivity. And one politicalleader’s extremism is another activist’s genuine cause. Think of the Suffragettes a century ago (although some were included in a battle project) or radical environment modification protesters obstructing roadways today. “Most extremist products and activities are not unlawful and do not fulfill the terrorism or the nationwide security limit,” Mr Gove confessed in his Commons speech.
