A case study exploring EMF sensitivity, tachycardia and fatigue, and a holistic protocol to restore sleep and wellbeing.
A young woman in her 30s presented at the clinic with a range of symptoms. She had been to several doctors and given various pain relief medications but had not found an answer that explained her symptoms, therefore no specific solutions had been suggested. As such, apart from pain relief for headaches, nothing had improved — and in fact was getting worse.
She was a successful, entrepreneurial young woman who had set up and been running a very successful computer business for many years, but was finding that her health had been deteriorating so much she was having difficulty managing the business. She was very distressed with the changes.
On discussing her symptoms, she had a range of interacting issues, which included severe headaches (the pain relief medication helped) and issues sleeping, so she was becoming increasingly exhausted. Periodically, she felt dizzy and had difficulty concentrating, reducing her mental clarity and memory.
The most concerning symptom, however, was sudden, unexplained “attacks” of a very fast heartbeat (tachycardia), creating overwhelming anxiety. She had been to hospital several times with these, but on testing no abnormality could be found medically. She was referred to a cardiologist, and his test results were also normal. However, the concern medically was that the tachycardia put her at risk of atrial fibrillation, where the heart beats so fast it gets out of rhythm — a potentially life-threatening situation. The medical suggestion she was given was to take blood-thinning medications (to reduce risk), but these have a range of side effects she was unhappy with, so was hoping for a different solution.
On further questioning, she also experienced severe muscle pain at times. Otherwise, her digestion was reasonable, she ate a relatively good diet and until recently had been exercising regularly, although the increasing fatigue from lack of sleep and muscle pain was reducing this.
This was a very interesting case. In looking for diagnostic patterns, the most likely solution was something that is only just starting to be recognised: an increasing EMF (electromagnetic field) sensitivity. This diagnosis fitted both her symptoms and the occupational hazards of her business. Not easy to treat in her profession.
Any improvement was going to mean large (and challenging) changes. Initially, we suggested a two-week holiday, away from her phone and the business (away from as many EMF sources as could be managed), to give her body a rest and so we could implement changes. The next step was to check
