Nicola Mason and her family-run company, Smitten Merino, are dedicated to producing sustainable and ethical clothes that hasactually been grown, farmed and stitched in Tasmania.
What was your preliminary vision for Smitten Merino and has that altered over time?
Over 16 years ago, we had a dream to produce inyourarea made, Merino clothes here in Tasmania. We had justrecently moved from WA and were sensation really cold. When driving up the Midlands we saw all the sheep and questioned where the wool was going (to Italy to make Zegna matches it turned out!). We understood that there was no-one making Merino wool clothes in Tasmania anylonger, so we set ourselves the obstacle to do it. Our vision was to aid assistance Australian wool growers and guarantee regional manufacture of our garments. Nothing has altered in that time: we still need ethical and regional manufacture and are really proud to usage Australian superfine Merino, a natural fiber.
Smitten Merino is a household company. Please share who is included and where, and what that is like?
I’m the designer and stylist and I likewise take item pictures and compose the newsletter. My hubby, Carl, is the accounts, marketing and operations supervisor. Our child Holly is the primary design, social media supervisor and runs the Salamanca market stall. My other child does some part time modelling for us however works in Queensland as a GP so is not in-house. Our boy takes some pictures and uses style concepts when he’s not browsing Shippies! Having this lotsof household members included can be a lot of enjoyable and like all households, it can have tense minutes! Luckily, we constantly willpower things rather rapidly and get back to valuing the advantage of owning and being part of a household company. People love the story and the provenance of the Smitten household organization, and we feel really fortunate to be doing what we do.
If you might modification 2 things in the style market, what would they be?
Firstly, I would modification the exploitation of females in sweatshop factories and pay them a reasonable living wage. Secondly, I would guarantee that brand-new items were just made from natural eco-friendly fibers like wool, linen, hemp and silk. No more plastic obtained materials!
