A journey through electroclash, techno and acid from the creator of LA’s Xtended Release cumulative.
In early 2020, simply after the world was put into lockdown, LA-based DJ and manufacturer Christiane Øyen aka séverine published a track to SoundCloud that would endupbeing a small viral hit. ‘Look How Hard I’m Into You’ integrates the singing from Ariana Grande’s ‘Into You’ with Barker’s ‘Look How Hard I’ve Tried’ to develop a work of basic however efficient mashup genius that has giventhat appeared in 2 Radio 1 Essential Mixes.
‘Look How Hard I’m Into You’ is reflective of the large variety of affects that make up séverine’s technique to music. As a young music fan growing up in Long Beach, séverine was immersed in hypnotictrance and electroclash, which offered method to techno and rave as the LA scene developed. A self-described “poptimist”, séverine draws on all of these experiences to develop music and DJ sets that cross stylistic limits and prioritise bliss over all else.
Since 2018, séverine hasactually headed up DIY rave cumulative Xtended Release, an LA-based celebration that has paired regional skill togetherwith global artists consistingof Dis Fig, Jasmine Infiniti and Ariel Zetina. In her Fact Mix, séverine uses a taste of the LA scene while staying real to the music that formed her special design, beginning with the timeless Jacques Lu Cont remix of Felix Da Housecat’s ‘Silver Screen Shower Scene’ and moving through tracks from M.E.S.H., Coucou Chloe, False Witness, Nkisi, Privacy and Portishead.
“I desired this mix to integrate as numerous previous and present selves as possible, mixed together insomecases flawlessly, often not, to conjureup ecstasy and stress in fast waves,” séverine states. “It begins out with some of my preferred electro home bangers from my youth priorto blending in some staple tracks of my live sets over the years. From there it changes to a primarily 4/4-driven noise mashing together all the various pressures of techno that make my brain go brrrrrr—industrial, hardgroove, schranz, acid, some shit that sounds like raving in a bounce home on the moon. In 2 words, it’s a hot spiral.”
“This mix was certainly made with LA dancefloors in mind; it’s been stunning seeing progressively moreyouthful and queerer crowds here go so hard for significantly weirder and muchdeeper sets, supporting the residents and knowing about the history. I devote this to the women and gays veryfirst and primary, particularly the ones at the rave to discover neighborhood and themselves, open to hearing something brand-new and a little difficult. I likewise commit this to all the breathtaking transfem DJs who haveactually been my function designs and whose sets have left me essentially altered.”
