Reality Mix 887: Ariel Zetina

A high-energy journey through worldwide rave sounds old and brand-new from Belizean-American DJ and manufacturer Ariel Zetina.

As a citizen of Chicago’s wellknown Smartbar, it makes sense that Ariel Zetina is highly affected by the city’s long history of home music. However, because her 2019 EP Organism, Zetina’s music hasactually pressed the design forward by pulling in a differed tapestry of designs – soca, punta and brukdown (a nod to her mom’s Belizean origin) as well as video videogame soundtracks and late ’90s hypnotictrance have all filtered into her procedure, which has regularly provided some of the most innovative UnitedStates club tracks of current years.

Zetina’s launching album, Cyclorama – launched earlier this year on Local Action – continued this run of kind, illustration on her background as a theatre author and her individual experience as a trans lady of colour to craft a stunning set of tracks abundant in story. “I thinkof all the tracks on this as the lights and action predicted onto the cyclorama,” Zetina states of the album. “The whole album is like the cyc, a representation of the sky. Or an thoughtof sky. An pictured dancefloor. An pictured theatrical production.”

On Zetina’s Fact Mix, she offers a window into the noise of her Diamond Formation celebration at Smartbar and that of her other nights in the city, consistingof Ariel’s Party and Rumors. It kicks off with Morgan Hislop’s clattering club edit of Samantha Urbani’s ‘Time Time Time’, taking in barrelling rave techno from Devoye, Ikonika’s funk-tinged timeless ‘PR812’, James Bangura’s punchy club tool ‘Monterrey’ and Jonny L’s hardcore classic ‘The Ansaphone’ priorto closing out with MCR-T & horsegiirL’s horse banger, ‘My Barn, My Rules’.
