An intimate ambient soundtrack to the ups and downs of 2022 from the pointofview of speculative manufacturer and noise artist Nexcyia.
Nexcyia is the musical alias of Adam Dove, an African-American/French noise artist and ambient artist who divides his time inbetween London and Paris. His creative practice, which includes sculpture, setup, painting and moving image as well as noise art, checksout ideas of alienation and otherness in the African-American experience. “We neverever truly speak about the sonification of race and the racialisation of listening,” Dove informed The Wire in 2022, goingover his 2021 setup INTER(FEAR)ENCE. Inspired by the Black sociologist and civil rights activist WEB Du Bois’ concept of a “transparent wall”, he positioned a speaker beneath the glass of a carsandtruck door playing a smothered recording of the late Sandra Bland, a Black victim of UnitedStates stop and search policies. “Black and white individuals can just see each other, today, they can’t hear each other,” Dove stated.
The idea of otherness is something that he checkedout in his spectacular 2020 launching EP, Crawl, launched on London’s Alien Jams label. Across its 6 deeply layered structures, Dove integrated controlled discovered sounds with granular synthesis to develop intimate expressions of his inner experience through huge ambient vistas peppered with fragile textures. On his follow-up, the Origin EP launched on Cafe OTO’s internal label Takuroku, Dove crafted a wider meditation on location, time and being.
