Reality Mix: Tomu DJ

Tomu DJ checksout some of her developmental affects and motivations while looking ahead to the next chapter of her noise.

Tomu DJ foundout to DJ by listening to the late DJ Rashad, DJ Earl, DJ Manny and the rest of the pioneering footwork artists of the fundamental Teklife label. In reality, she can identify 2015 as the year she formally fell for electronic music, when she and a goodfriend scheduled DJ Spinn to play a celebration at her college in Portland, Oregon. Inspired by the alluring mix of furious percussion and R&B vocal samples released by Spinn to ravaging result, Tomu rightaway started making her own pop modifies to play throughout her own sets. “I foundout to DJ from Teklife, so my blends are constantly affected by footwork regardless of the choice,” she describes.

“For this mix I selected to play primarily home and juke, with a little bit of footwork and some club made by manufacturers who motivate me, as well as a choice of my own tracks both launched and from my upcoming record, Crazy Trip.” Veering away from the vocal pop stylings of her current sets and blends, Tomu DJ threads featherweight home and climatic club through some tongue-in-cheek penitentiaries and a coupleof classics from the likes of Larry Heard, Paul Johnson and Drexciya, set versus the toppling cadences and ankle-snapping speed of some of footwork and juke’s shining lights, consistingof the previouslymentioned DJ Manny, RP Boo, Traxman, DJ Tre and, of course, DJ Rashad.

Rashad’s head-scrambling cooperation with Addison Groove, ‘Acid Bit,’ opens the mix up into a gauzy coda of Tomu’s own productions, pulled from her 2021 launching FEMINISTA, last year’s precious wandering juke musing Half Moon Bay, as well as the title track from her upcoming album. Serving as an acoustic entertain bouche for her brand-new sound, ‘Crazy Trip’ sees Tomu breaking brand-new ground with her next stress of unconventional category combination. New Age synth swell and Drain Gang-adjacent melancholy ecstasy float over swelling noise style, lilting, digital music box tones that are suddenly snapped shut with tactile percussion and soft snarls of breakbeats. It’s an interesting glance into a brand-new dreamscape and the next chapter of Tomu DJ.
