Toumba spindles through a two-hour meditation on love, lament and desire.
2023 hasactually been an essential year for Toumba, the Jordanian, Ammani manufacturer and DJ born Yazan Zyadat. While last year litup Zyadat as one of the most amazing increasing skills in dance music as he made constant efforts to share the spotlight with both regional and diasporic SWANA artists, this year saw him digging muchdeeper into the historic and modern musical customs of Jordan. On Petals, Zyadat checkedout Levantine microtonality, deconstructed dabkeh, drew from Jordanian weddingevent music and Arabic musical modes. For Janoob (?%AIRCONDITIONERنوب), which equates as ‘the south’ in Arabic, he was affected by the music of the Bedouins, launching on Nervous Horizon and in so doing coming complete circle from the minute Zyadat veryfirst chose to start making music, when he heard TSVI’s ‘Hossam’ played by SHERELLE at an afters.
Most justrecently, on For Palestine, he dug into his vaults to discover unreleased product to raise funds for Medical Aid for Palestine and to buy E-Sims for individuals in Gaza. Off the dancefloor his work curating the program for MNFA مَنفى and his assistance of Amman’s important speculative station Drowned By Locals highlights Zyadat’s determined kindness and devotion to the Jordan scene while layingout him as the kind of necessary force for excellent sorely required in electronic music scenes the world over. As 2023 draws to an end, the artist takes stock with his Fact mix, a almost two-hour session that allatonce serves as a summary of some of the year’s extremely best music and an uncompromising transmission from the heart.
“Welcome into my life from its twenties to its nineties,” Zyadat quotes. “This is an very unique and individual mix devoted to love, pureness, commitment, hope and yearning. By no indicates is it a club or a dance mix, inspiteof it having its minutes. It’s the musical personification of debilitating psychological turbulence rooted in love, lament and desire. Hopefully throughout the nearly two-hour length of the mix it conjuresup in you what it did in me.”
