VTSS and Actual Objects blur together the digital and the physical in ‘Notoriously Fast’

Created at 180 Studios XR area at 180 The Strand, Actual Objects draw motivation from Holy Motors and Under The Skin in a sci-fi scary excitement trip starring Martyna Maja, the artist understood as VTSS.

‘Notoriously Fast’ is the mostcurrent trip from manufacturer VTSS into hell-for-leather, techno pop area, showingup as the last of 4 emotive, vocal-led tracks that make up her launching EP for Ninja Tune, Circulus Vitiosus. With each cut from the job checkingout a various side to the multi-faceted character that is VTSS, ‘Notoriously Fast’ discovers the artist at terminal speed, barrelling into the depths of her own speed freak nature without stoppingbriefly for breath. Working in partnership with previous Fact Residents Actual Objects for the track’s visual, the artist born Martyna Maja is cast as both mystical alien bicyclerider and the ominous sea siren in the pursuit of which the bicyclerider races, a nighttime chase that sees the functions of hunter and victim endingupbeing indistinct from one another. Drawing motivation from Leos Carax’s modern-day timeless Holy Motors and Jonathan Glazer’s amazing Under The Skin, Case Miller, Claire and Rick Farin flawlessly mix live videofootage, CGI and A.I.-assisted imaging to develop a high-speed fever dream soaked in sci-fi scary and visceral surrealism.

“The whole procedure was quick; it was a fast-forming relationship inbetween the 3 of us, a quick partnership that came together in simply a coupleof weeks, and the video functions me riding a bike, so it’s extremely on brandname with the ‘fast’ story,” describes Maja. Filmed utilizing the XR Stage at 180 Studios, ‘Notoriously Fast’ makes usage of pre-configured virtual environments, versus which physical results can be recorded, frequently imperceptibly. “Sometimes we like to remind individuals of how we change environments and particular areas by leaving in something that breaks down the impression and reveals our procedure,” states Claire Farin. “For example, in the ‘Notoriously Fast ‘video, the XR phase we utilized at the studio ended up being far more sensible than we ever envisioned, so we left in a shot where Martyna and the background wear’t sync up and it’s apparent she’s not physically and actually riding a motorbike along a freeway tunnel.”

“With this video, we truly attempted to play around and blur the lines inbetween what’s genuine, where things were shot and how things were made,” continues Rick. “We desire individuals to concern where things are taking location; is this a liminal area? Is it all CGI? It’s about the push and pull inbetween nature and innovation and how they’re not constantly so different. It’s all kind of combined together, which is something we do with all our jobs.” Seeking to collapse differences inbetween the technological and the natural, in ‘Notoriously Fast’, Actual Objects continuously blur the digital and the physical together, as though the sheer speed at which this element of Maya’s character moves allows her to shift inbetween states, from hunted to hunter, from NPC to avatar, from Martyna Maya to VTSS.

‘Notoriously Fast’ is taken from Circulus Vitiosus, which is out now on Ninja Tune. You can discover VTSS on Instagram.
