CBS Sports Analyst Grant Wahl Dies in Qatar During World Cup at Age 48

Longtime soccer reporter Grant Wahl, who was covering the World Cup for CBS Sports in Qatar, passedaway on Thursday while reporting on the quarterfinal match inbetween Argentina and the Netherlands.

NPR can validate the death of longtime soccer sportswriter Grant Wahl (@GrantWahl). He passedaway today in Doha, Qatar while covering the Argentina-Netherlands World Cup quarterfinal. Story to come.

We were deeply saddened to discover of the death of Grant Wahl and sendout our acknowledgements to his household, with whom we haveactually been in close interaction. We are engaged with senior Qatari authorities to see to it that his household’s wants are satisfied as expeditiously as possible.

A cause of death has not been launched openly.

According to the Associated Press, “U.S. media seated near him stated Wahl fell back in his seat in the media tribune at Lusail Iconic Stadium throughout additional time, and pressreporters surrounding to him called for help. Emergency services employees reacted really rapidly, the pressreporters stated, and the pressreporters lateron were informed that Wahl had passedaway.”

Wahl composed on Monday that he hadactually been ill for about 10 days, associating it to being overworked and not getting much sleep while covering the World Cup priorto his signs ultimately got bad sufficient that he went to a medical center in Qatar.

“I went into the medical center at the primary media center today, and they stated I mostlikely have bronchitis,” he composed. “They offered me a course of prescriptionantibiotics and some durable cough syrup, and I’m currently sensation a bit muchbetter simply a coupleof hours lateron. But still: No bueno.”

He stated he checked unfavorable for COVID-19.

Before the United States’ match with Wales on Nov. 21, Wahl published on social media that he was not atfirst approved gainaccessto to Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium for using a t-shirt with a rainbow surrounding a soccer ball:

Wahl informed Kevin Dotson and Ben Morse of CNN after the occurrence that he hadactually been offered guarantees he would be permitted to wear such clothes into the arena. He evenmore discussed his choice to wear the t-shirt:

It’s actually essential to me and it’s not needed by any stretch of the creativity. I’ve got household members who are gay. I’ve got buddies who are gay. I’ve got reporter buddies who are gay who are here in Qatar. But you wear’t requirement that to be helpful, to be an ally. So, I was thinking about all of those individuals theotherday. I was thinking about Colorado Springs. I was thinking all sorts of things. And if I have to be apprehended for 30 minutes, it’s kind of frustrating. But it’s not an problem for me. And so I was grateful to at least assistance out a little bit.
