N.W.A. is being honored by the Grammys with the 2024 Lifetime Achievement Award in light of the group’s effect on music.
On Friday (Jan. 5), the Recording Academy revealed that N.W.A. will be amongst other receivers of the distinguished award, which will be provided on Feb. 3 at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre in Los Angeles. Other honorees in this year’s class consistof Gladys Knight, Donna Summer, the Clark Sisters, Tammy Wynette, and Laurie Anderson.
According to the Academy, the Lifetime Achievement Award is “presented by vote of the Recording Academy’s National Trustees to entertainers who, throughout their lifetimes, haveactually made innovative contributions of impressive creative significance to the field of recording.”
N.W.A. will endupbeing the 6th Hip-Hop act to get the Grammy’s Lifetime Achievement Award. Previous receivers consistof Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five, Run-DMC, Public Enemy, Salt-N-Pepa, and Slick Rick. Last year, the Recording Academy revealed its inaugural Dr. Dre Global Impact Award, with its name being its veryfirst ever honoree.
In addition to N.W.A., DJ Kool Herc will likewise be renowned for his cultural contributions and prevalent impact. The 68-year-old will be provided the Trustees Award, a “Special Merit” award which Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. states was developed for those who “reflect the abundant variety” that drives innovative neighborhoods.
