Spain battens down inthemiddleof risk of more severe rain; death toll increases to 205

Nov. 1 (UPI) — Spain was preparing for more heavy rains Friday 2 days after ravaging flash floods eliminated more than 200 in the east of the nation, damaged homes and services and put secret facilities out of action.

The State Meteorological Agency provided an immediate red caution for heavy rain for the seaside zone of Huelva province on the Gulf of Cadiz, 15 miles east of the Portuguese border, beginning at 9 a.m. regional time through midnight Friday.

“Updated unfavorable weathercondition occasions alert in Andalusia. Active TODAY. Maximum level red. Image of the caution map in impact at 09: 06,” AEMET composed in an alert published on X accompanied by a map of the worst impacted locations revealing more than an inch-and-half of rain per hour and build-ups of 5.5 inches of rain projection for the coming hours.

Inland from the seaside zone, 2 nearby districts of Huelva province, Andevalo y Condado and Aracena, were under an orange caution, the 2nd greatest alert level, with AEMET forecasting more than an inch of rain per hour and build-ups of 4.3 inches.

People in the area were prompted to stay at home and not to travel otherthan in emergencysituations with the caution echoed by Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez who appealed to individuals to follow AEMET’s suggestions.

“DANA [the high-altitude isolated depression blamed for the extreme weather] has not ended, there are provinces with orange and red cautions,” he stated in a post on X after goingto AEMET’s operations center in Madrid on Friday.

“Let us take severe safetymeasures and constantly be mindful to the details offered to us by the authorities.”

The cautions came as the death toll from flooding overnight Tuesday and Wednesday reached 205.
