(RNS) — This summerseason we keepinmind a political disaster from 50 years ago that numerous at the time thoughtabout the biggest constitutional crisis giventhat the Civil War. What endedupbeing recognized as the Watergate scandal started a series of doubtful and prohibited actions throughout the Richard Nixon administration that veryfirst came to light with the arrest of 5 robbers at the Democratic National Committee headoffice in Washington in June 1972.
Evidence would expose that the break-in, at a hotel and workplace complex called the Watergate, was part of a bigger spying and sabotage element of the Nixon reelection effort, funded by project funds.
President Nixon attempted to stop the discovery of the complete scope of this activity, informing his assistants to order the FBI to limitation its query. But in July of 1973, a trick White House recording system was exposed and when the pertinent tapes were launched by court order, the level of Nixon’s participation was exposed. Months of Senate hearings, followed by an impeachment query by the House Judiciary Committee, led to 3 shortarticles of impeachment in July 1974.
With discoveries from the last tapes provided on Aug. 5 of that year, Nixon’s assistance in Congress disappeared. Nixon revealed his resignation on Aug. 8 and was wassuccessful by Vice President Gerald Ford, who pardoned Nixon on Sept. 8, 1974.

Throughout U.S. history, political scandals haveactually exposed corruption and misbehaviours in almost every governmental administration. Something various took location, nevertheless, in Watergate.
