Shinzo Abe, Japan’s previous leader, is in “severe condition” Friday after being shot throughout a project speech in western Japan, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida informed pressreporters, a stunning attack in a nation that has some of the strictest weapon control laws anywhere.

Local fire department authorities Makoto Morimoto stated Abe was in cardio and lung arrest after being shot. His heart stopped while he was being airlifted to a healthcenter, Morimoto said. 

In a news conference Friday, Kishida stated he hopes Abe will endure and that physicians are working to conserve his life.

“Currently, medicalprofessionals are doing whatever they can at this minute. I am hoping and hoping that Former Prime Minister Abe will endure this,” Kishida stated. 

Police jailed a male suspect at the scene of the shooting in Nara, Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno informed pressreporters. According to NHK, Japan’s public broadcaster, Tetsuya Yamagami, 41, was detained on suspicion of tried murder. 

Ministry of Defense authorities said Yamagami worked for the Maritime Self-Defense Force for 3 years upuntil around 2005, NHK reported. The suspect stated he was disappointed with and intended to kill Abe in a cops declaration, NHK stated, mentioning cops authorities. 

The shooting was “barbaric, and harmful, and it cannot be endured,” Kishida stated. “We will do whatever we can. I would like to usage the most severe words offered to condemn this act.”
