SAN DIEGO (AP) — Milwaukee Brewers novice reducer Gus Varland was struck on the right hand and then his jaw with a 105.1 milesperhour line drive by Manny Machado and came out of Saturday’s videogame versus the San Diego Padres.
The frightening minute came in the bottom of the 8th. Varland was knocked to the ground by the effect. He woozily got to his feet and dropped his glove as 2 colleagues and a fitnessinstructor hurried to his side. He was assisted to his knees as he was tended to priorto being assisted off the field.
X-rays were unfavorable and Varland stated he felt OK.
