A coupleof airports in Florida started closing and airlinecompanies canceled hundreds of flights on Tuesday ahead of Hurricane Milton’s arrival. Government authorities from President Joe Biden on down alerted business not to overcharge individuals gettingaway the storm’s course.
“I’m calling on the airlinecompanies and other business to supply as much service as possible to accommodate evacuations, and not to engage in cost gouging — to simply do it on the level,” Biden stated after a typhoon instruction.
Airlines protected their actions, some stating they had enforced fare caps in the last couple days.
By midafternoon Tuesday on the East Coast, airlinecompanies had canceled more than 700 U.S. flights, compared with less than 200 cancellations on Monday and less than 100 each of the 2 previous days, according to the FlightAware tracking service.
About half of Tuesday’s cancellations were at Tampa International Airport, which shut down in the earlymorning as Milton approached.
Travelers jam-packed the airport on Monday, hoping to catch one of the staying flights out of the storm’s anticipated course. Cerina McQuillan was attempting to get her 17-year-old child on a flight to New York.
McQuillan stated that when she veryfirst attempted to buy a one-way ticket, rates were around $200. Then the airlinecompany’s website crashed.
“All of a abrupt it went back on onceagain, and the flights quadrupled in cost. It went up to like $750 within a matter of seconds,” she stated. “There were rates even as high as $1,000 for one leg. So incorrect! So incorrect!”
Jeremy Bingaman, a music-industry podcaster, published a screenshot of United Airlines fares for flights out of Tampa to St. Louis on Tuesday. They went as high as $2,351 for refundable tickets in economy class on United Express, compared with Southwest, which revealed tickets at $399, and American, which showed flights to Chicago for around $600.
“Hey (at)united, what’s up with the cost gouging in Tampa for individuals attempting to leave? … dubious,” he composed in an X post that was reposted more than 4,000 times.
None of those flights he highlighted took off — they were all setup after the airport suspended operations.
