U.S. airlines canceled high numbers of flights for a 2nd straight day on Friday as they attempted to recuperate from storms while accommodating growing crowds of summerseason tourists.

By early afternoon in the eastern U.S., airlinecompanies hasactually scrubbed more than 1,100 flights after canceling more than 1,700 on Thursday, according to tracking service FlightAware.

Airports with the most cancellations consistedof those in Charlotte, North Carolina, a significant center for American Airlines, LaGuardia and Newark Liberty in the New York City location, and Reagan Washington National outdoors Washington, D.C.

On Thursday, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg held a virtual conference with airlinecompany CEOs to go over actions the airlinecompanies are taking to run efficiently over the July 4 vacation and the rest of the summerseason, and to enhance lodging of travelers who get stranded when flights are canceled.
