China informs International Olympic Committee of issues about ‘politicising’ sport

(Photo: handout) China hasactually revealed its issues about the “politicisation of sports occasions” to the International Olympic Committee after a series of occurrences that have alarmed Beijing, consistingof a US-led diplomatic boycott of the Winter Games and current anthem oversights including Hong Kong groups. The problem was raised when Premier Li Qiang satisfied Thomas Bach, the head of the IOC, in Beijing over the weekend and promised to deepen cooperation with the sports body. “China’s efforts to promote the Olympic spirit will neverever stop, and [China is] allset to work with IOC to oppose the politicisation of sports, and make evenmore contributions to the Olympic motion,” Li stated, according to the authorities news firm Xinhua. It is not understood whether Li discussed any particular occurrences, however it is uncommon for China to raise such issues with the IOC in public and it was the veryfirst time it had made such remarks giventhat the Winter Olympics in Beijing early last year.
