The comic, who co-founded the charity with director Richard Curtis in 1985, stated it was time for “new dealswith” after almost 40 years at the helm. This year’s project will culminate with the Red Nose Day broadcast on BBC One on Friday 15 March. “I’m not going to be hosting any more Comic Reliefs after this,” he informed BBC Breakfast on Wednesday. He stated he would continue to make unique looks and documentaries, however that it was “time to hand on to the brand-new generation”. “There’s all these brand-new, terrific comics with podcasts and 9 million fans, and those guys or ladies oughtto be hosting Comic Relief now so that the young individuals and the brand-new increase of audiences can plug into the next phase of Comic Relief, since there will be a next phase, and since we desire to continue takingon problems of hardship and oppression. “It’s time to hand over the reins, as it were,” he included.
