French election: Left rise threatens Macron bulk in France

Jean-Luc Mélenchon’s left-green alliance completed neck and neck with Mr Macron’s Ensemble (Together), in terms of votes cast in Sunday’s initially round. The president dealswith a fight in next week’s 2nd round to win 289 seats and keep his bulk. Turnout was a traditionally low 47.5%. Within half an hour of the veryfirst forecast, a sombre Jean-Luc Mélenchon revealed his alliance was in the lead: “The fact at the end of the veryfirst round is that the governmental celebration is beaten and beat.” He called on citizens to turn out in force next Sunday “to turndown definitively the devastating policies of Mr Macron’s bulk”. Centrist Emmanuel Macron won a 2nd term in April, however without a bulk in the Assembly he will battle to push through reforms. He plans to raise slowly the retirement age from 62 to 65, while Mr Mélenchon pledges to lower it to60 Although Ensemble won 25.71% of the vote, partially ahead of the left’s 25.61%, it was still predicted to control the National Assembly. TF1 pollster Ifop offered Ensemble 275 to 305 seats, with the green-left alliance on 175-205. Ipsos for France Télévisions stated Mr Macron’s alliance was heading for a lower 255-295 seats and the left 150-190.
