About 5 million honeybees bound for Alaska last weekend got waylaid when Delta Air Lines routed them through Atlanta, where most of the bees passedaway after being left for hours in cages on the ground throughout hot weathercondition.
The bees were the veryfirst of 2 deliveries bought by Alaska beekeeper Sarah McElrea from a supplier in California. The bees were to be utilized to pollinate apple orchards and nurseries in Alaska, where they are not native.
But the bees were bumped from their initial path to Anchorage, Alaska, and rather put on a flight to Atlanta, where they were to be moved to an Anchorage-bound airplane, according to released reports.
McElrea stated she anxious when the 800-pound delivery didn’t showup in Atlanta in time to make the linking flight. The next day, she stated, Delta informed her some bees had left, so airlinecompany employees put the cages holding the bees outdoors a Delta freight bay.
