SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — Protests over the high expense of living in the French Caribbean island of Martinique turned violent late Wednesday, with at least one individual eliminated as demonstrators set fire to a authorities station, automobiles and roadway barriers as they clashed with officers.

It was one of the most violent nights yet because demonstrations started more than a month ago, with the federalgovernment releasing a declaration asserting that no cops officers utilized their weapons and that the killing was under examination.

Videos published on social media revealed protesters robbery grocery shops and other organizations as they tossed rocks and bottles at authorities, who reacted with tear gas.
