U.S. Agriculture Department authorities haveactually released an internal examination into how the company managed reports of major issues at a Boar’s Head deli meat plant connected to a fatal listeria breakout, a legislator stated Tuesday.
Sen. Richard Blumenthal stated that USDA Inspector General Phyllis Fong is looking into whether federal detectives and Virginia state inspectors reacted properly to lots of reports of issues at the factory, consistingof mold, bugs, leaking water and meat and fat residue on walls, floorings and devices. Inspection reports dating back at least 2 years suggested that the conditions might position an “imminent risk” to food security.
The action came in action to a Sept. 5 letter from Blumenthal requiring an examination, he stated.
“USDA took practically no action — permitting Boar’s Head to continue organization as normal at its chronically unhygienic Virginia plant — regardlessof finding duplicated severe infractions,” the Connecticut Democrat stated in a declaration.
