The Ministry of Civil Aviation has informally conveyed to airline operators the need for Indian leadership at Indian carriers, as the country’s aviation ecosystem expands rapidly, government sources told CNBC-TV18.

According to sources, the ministry believes that airline leadership should reflect India’s growing aviation identity, particularly at a time when the country is emerging as one of the world’s fastest-growing air travel markets.

Officials have indicated that as Indian airlines scale up — in fleet size, passenger volumes and global presence — leadership that understands domestic market nuances and consumer sentiment could help strengthen trust and brand connect.

However, the ministry, in an official response, has categorically denied having conveyed any such message.

Sources added that the government believes Indian CEOs may be more capable of connecting with domestic passengers, regulators, employees and investors, particularly as aviation becomes a key pillar of India’s economic and infrastructure growth story.
