The death toll from the February 5 coal mine blast in Meghalaya’s East Jaintia Hills district has climbed to 30 after two more injured miners died at a hospital in Assam.



The two victims, residents of Katigorah in Assam’s Cachar district, succumbed to their injuries at Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH) on the night of Monday, February 9, news agency PTI reported citing an official.


“Two persons injured in the coal mine blast died at the SMCH hospital on Monday night. They have been identified as Ramchandra Baishnab and Nimaruddin,” the health department official said.


Nine injured miners were admitted to SMCH following the explosion at an illegally run coal mine in the remote Thangsku area of Mynsngat village in neighbouring Meghalaya.



The Meghalaya government has ordered a judicial inquiry to determine the circumstances that led to the blast and fix responsibility.
