Interview: Cecilia Bengolea on her dancehall movie for VF: Reverb

The artist and choreographer talksabout Shelly Belly Inna Real Life, shot in Jamaica inbetween 2015 and 2019 and revealing upuntil 22 December at 180 Studios.

In a brand-new interview, Argentinian artist, choreographer, and dancer Cecilia Bengolea information the experience of making Shelly Belly Inna Real Life, her video setup for The Vinyl Factory: Reverb exhibit.

Exploring the world of dancehall – a category and type of dance stemming in Jamaica – Bengolea’s Shelly Belly Inna Real Life grants an intimate view of the neighborhoods and people that keep the scene going. Accompanying dancehall icon Shelly Belly, Bengolea checksout the choreography and social context of dancehall’s individuals and the larger culture around them.

In this interview, Bengolea goesover her connection with dancehall, the relationship inbetween the Jamaican authorities and dance and the larger world of street dance.

Shelly Belly Inna Real Life isn’t Bengolea’s initially brush with Shelly Belly or The Vinyl Factory. In 2016, Bengolea and her collective partner Jeremy Deller teamed up with The Vinyl Factory to produce Bom Bom’s Dream for The Infinite Mix exhibit.

Following the experiences of a Japanese dancer understood as Bom Bom, Bom Bom’s Dream similarly engaged the dancehall and included Shelly Belly in a starring function.
