It’s been a tale of two seasons for the Denver Broncos and Kansas City Chiefs, but the differing trajectories had little impact on the intensity between the AFC West rivals.
The timing of this NFL Week 17 matchup falling on Christmas couldn’t have been more appropriate for Denver (12-3), given what’s at stake. Quarterback Bo Nix turned into “St. Nix-laus” to help deliver a hard-fought win for the Broncos, who are now in position to secure the AFC West title and the No. 1 seed. Sean Payton’s squad will now need a Patriots loss, and losses or ties by the Chargers, Bills and Jaguars to secure the No. 1 seed; the club can also lock up the AFC West with a Chargers loss or tie.
As for the Chiefs (6-9), playing another meaningless game without Patrick Mahomes (torn ACL) certainly felt like an extra helping of coal in their stockings. Still, Kansas City showed tremendous resilience at Arrowhead and nearly ruined Denver’s holiday like the Grinch.
