The 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup continued Saturday with a Group D battle between Denmark and China at HBF Park in Perth, Australia.
Denmark won an unofficial title in 1970, but since then the country has been quiet on the world stage, last reaching the quarterfinals back in 1995. This is the Danes’ first World Cup appearance since 2007. But against China, which is appearing in its eighth World Cup, Denmark came up big late.
In a heavy defensive battle, Denmark found a hero in Amalie Vansgaard in the last minute of regulation time, seizing a crucial group win.

It took the full length of the match for either team to break the 0-0 tie, and Amalie Vansgaard sent the Denmark faithful into an absolute frenzy as she headed home a clutch score.

With both teams in desperate search of their first goal, Denmark’s tensions flared after the team felt it deserved a foul call on this tackle.
55′: Heady play!
Venturing out of the goalie’s box is a risky move, but big risks can reap rewards. For Lene Christensen, taking this chance in the defensive third could’ve prevented a China goal. It’s a gamble her manager likely approved wholeheartedly.
51′: Missed the mark
Denmark responded with an attack of its own, and just missed a scoring opportunity on an open net after forcing the China’s goalkeeper out of position.
49′: Kick it into gear
China was uber-aggressive to open the second half, and came close to taking a lead, but Denmark’s Christensen laid out for a nice save.
40′: You can’t do that!
It was a back-and-forth defensive struggle in the early going, sometimes physical. But Denmark’s Rikke Sevecke got a little bit too physical at one point, earning a yellow card for grabbing, then pulling down, her opponent.
1′: A bit of an ambitious try
Kathrine Kühl took an early shot at testing China’s keeper right out of the gate, but her attempt on goal was well off the mark.
