The notoriously two-faced and litigious Elon Musk has brought his double requirements on complimentary speech and responsibility to a brand-new department in Washington developed to boost “government performance.” What might go incorrect?

For billionaire Musk, whose organizations currently appear to be benefiting giventhat the statement—not much. But for those who desire to makesure real federalgovernment responsibility, it might be rather grim.

Despite the words “government” and “efficiency” in its title, the brand-new Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) will run outside of federalgovernment, with Musk and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy at the helm. So, while Donald Trump stated the commission’s objective will be to “make the U.S. federalgovernment responsible to ‘WE THE PEOPLE,'” the guys in charge won’t really be responsible to anybody, as they will not be subject to requirement principles standards needing disclosure of capacity disputes of interest (of which there are lotsof here).

The development of DOGE is an item example of Trump’s intent to choose individuals to run firms they have openly reviled, and are vocally excited to takeapart. “We anticipate particular companies to be erased straight-out,” Ramaswamy justrecently stated. If the paradox wasn’t currently thick sufficient, provided Musk’s own history of buffooning and reducing whistleblowers in his business and obstructing individuals who slam him on X, the unseriousness of the recently formed firm is highlighted by its acronym DOGE, which winks at Elon Musk’s preferred meme, the Dogecoin (a cryptocurrency coin that was developed as a joke).

In the Musk world view, openness and responsibility are completely subjective. In March 2022, numerous weeks before introducing his quote to buy Twitter, Musk stated himself a “free speech absolutist.” Nine months lateron, after finishing the acquisition, Musk started prohibiting popular reporters from the platform. Companies that took their marketing dollars inotherplaces were not seen as workingout their complimentary will. Musk tooklegalactionagainst them, explaining the business’ choice as a “conspiracy” and a “boycott,” and asking a federal court in Texas to prosecute them to the maximum.

On a more individual and unsafe level, Musk has consistently gone after people who slam him. In October, he called for the prosecution of Victoria Nuland, the U.S. undersecretary of state for political affairs, insinuating that she (and not Russian President Vladimir Putin) was accountable for sparking the war in Ukraine. In a more cooling occurrence, Musk backed a tweet implicating ex-Twitter trust and security officer, Yoel Roth, of being considerate to pedophilia, requiring Roth to relocation out of his home.

And then there is Musk’s treatment of Tesla whistleblowers, of which there are numerous. Cristina Balan, the early Tesla staffmember who raised security issues straight with Musk in 2020, and the 2 Tesla workers who submitted security issues with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in 2021, were summarily ended. More justrecently, there is the case of Lukasz Krupski, a Polish-born service professional who was hurt putting out a fire at a Tesla shipment website in Norway, then dripped thousands of pages of internal mishap information exposing the business’s awareness of auto-pilot security concerns. Krupski informed the BBC that whistleblowing on Tesla hadactually been “terrifying.”

Musk’s large individual and company entanglements in the federal federalgovernment likewise draw into concern Musk’s declares that the commission will provide “maximum openness.” Tesla has benef
