SEOUL, Dec. 7 (UPI) — A huge rally of protesters puttogether near the National Assembly structure in Seoul on a bitterly cold Saturday to call for President Yoon Suk Yeol’s elimination from workplace ahead of an impeachment vote over his temporary martial law statement.
A crowd that appeared to be in the hundreds of thousands filled the primary boulevard leading up to the National Assembly, snaked up and down side streets and spilled into a park over half a mile away. As the 5 p.m. opening of the parliament’s plenary session neared, crowds of individuals continued to emerge from trains and public transport centers, bundled up and bring indications calling for Yoon’s arrest and impeachment.
“We are here to safeguard our civil rights and have our voices heard,” 27-year-old J.R. Kim stated. “It was crucial to come here today.”
Like numerous of the moreyouthful protesters, Kim was bring an electronic lightstick utilized at K-pop shows, as the stateofmind brought a trace of liveliness togetherwith the outrage at Yoon’s stunning statement of martial law late Tuesday night.
The scene was reminiscent of the massive “Candlelight Revolution” demonstrations that led to the impeachment and elimination of previous President Park Geun-hye in 2017.
“There is both anger and satisfaction,” Kim stated. “But we will not leave upuntil Yoon is gone.”
Rallygoers were a mix of all ages, from households bringing little kids to those old adequate to have lived through a South Korean military dictatorship that ended in 1987.
