“I Bet He Couldn’t Do That”: Richard Hamilton Doubted LeBron’s Capability to Recreate Dominant Performance in Iconic Series

LeBron James seems to be somehow entering his prime at the age of 38. Throughout his career, LeBron has done some of the most ridiculous things and made it look easy. However, recently an NBA veteran claimed that King James can’t do what he did back in 2007 with consistency.

Richard Hamilton, during a recent interview, talked about his 2004 championship run with the Detroit Pistons and his experience of the 2007 Eastern Conference Finals. The 45-year-old said that although LeBron pulled off a great performance against them in game 5, it’s not something he could do against them consistently.

In his career spanning over two decades, LeBron has won everything there is to win for his franchise and his country. There have been several moments in his career that can be labeled as legendary. However, what LeBron did against the Pistons in 2007 is considered to be the beginning of his era. A game-winning 48-point performance by King James had the seasoned veterans on the Pistons squad scratching their heads in disbelief. Hamilton recently talked about experiencing LeBron’s greatness from the other side.

LeBron at the time was with the Cleveland Cavaliers and despite being a youngster on the team had a lot of expectations riding on him. His game five performance against the Pistons solidified him as a star in the sport and is now referred to as the day when the NBA witnessed the legend for the first time. However, Hamilton isn’t exactly fond of what unfolded in front of him. He said, “He had an amazing fourth quarter. I bet you if we played them five games in a row. I bet that he couldn’t do that on us five games in a row.”

However, a few years ago, Hamilton had said that he was in awe of LeBron’s performance during that game.

A 22-year-old LeBron had scored 29 of the last 30 points scored by the Cavs during that game. He was so brilliant that Hamilton admitted that his team lost count on how many points LeBron has scored. He recalled discussing with his teammates, “Let’s just take the ball out of his hands. Let’s make somebody else score.’ We felt as though we were so good at that time, we said ‘There’s no way…impossible…that one individual can beat us”.

The fact is that one individual did beat the entire Pistons team and today that game is remembered for that special 48-point performance by the 22-year-old LeBron.
