ROME (AP) — Pope Francis administered over the Vatican’s mournful Easter Vigil service on Saturday night, providing a 10-minute homily and baptizing 8 individuals, a day after allofasudden avoiding the Good Friday procession at the Colosseum as a health safetymeasure.

Francis wentinto the darkened, quiet St. Peter’s Basilica in his wheelchair, took his location in a chair and used an opening prayer. Sounding rather crowded and out of breath, he blessed an elaborately embellished Easter candlelight, the flame of which was then shared with other candlelights upuntil the entire basilica sparkled.

Over an hour lateron, Francis provided a 10-minute homily in a strong voice, cleaning his throat periodically.

The night service, one of the most solemn and essential minutes in the Catholic liturgical calendar, honors the resurrection of Jesus. The Vatican had stated Francis avoided the Good Friday procession to makesure his involvement in both the vigil service Saturday night, which normally lasts about 2 hours, and Easter Sunday Mass a coupleof hours lateron.

The 87-year-old Francis, who had part of one lung gotridof as a young male, hasactually been fighting breathing issues all winterseason that haveactually made it challenging for him to speak at length. He and the Vatican have stated he has had bronchitis, a cold or the influenza.

He hasactually canceled some audiences and typically asked an assistant to read aloud some of his speeches. But the alarm was raised when he dropped his Palm Sunday homily entirely last week at the last minute and then chose unexpectedly Friday to stay home rather than preside over the Way of the Cross procession at the Colosseum re-enacting Christ’s crucifixion.

The Vatican stated in a quick description that the choice was made to “conserve his health.”

The choice appeared to haveactually paid off Saturday night, as Francis was able to recite the prayers of the prolonged vigil service, and carryout the sacrament of baptism for the 8 grownups. The baptism is a conventional function of the Vatican’s Easter Vigil service.

In his homily Francis referred to the stone that the faithful think was eliminated from Christ’s burialplace after his death. Francis advised Catholics to getridof the stones in their lives that “block the door of our hearts, suppressing life, snuffingout hope, sendingtoprison us in the burialplace of our fears and issorryfor.”

In addition to his breathing issues, Francis had a piece of his big intestinaltract eliminated in 2021 and was hospitalized twotimes last year, consistingof assoonas to eliminate intestinaltract scar tissue from previous surgicaltreatments to address diverticulosis, or bulges in his intestinaltract wall.
