James Brown:                  Hello, and welcome to Five Things. I’m James Brown. It’s Sunday, June 12th,2022 On Sundays. We do things a bit inadifferentway focusing on one subject rather of 5. And this week we’re talking about Apple with USA Today’s tech expert, Brett Molina. Hi Brett.

Brett Molina:                   Hey there. Thanks for having me.

James Brown:                  So I desired to start by sharing something with you. I’ve been an Apple fan for a long time. I purchased an iBook when I was in college. I called it Banana.

Brett Molina:                   Nice.

James Brown:                  I have an iPad Mini. I had at least 3 or 4 iPod Nanos. I believe the last one was taken out of an old automobile of mine. I have 4 iPhones in my life. I’ve purchased 2 MacBook Pros. I’m recording this on a MacBook Pro, however truthfully for me, the adventure is gone. And I understand that Apple sales haveactually stagnated over the last coupleof years. And I believe part of it for me is, and I believe this fits in with the statements, is this ever-changing battery of, “We should modification the port. We needto modification the cable. We needto force you to buy all this additional things.”

I guess my point is with so numerous modifications continuously with the item, I feel a bit gouged. I feel like Apple is taking benefit of their smooth one operating system, one maker benefit to takeadvantageof me into costs more and more cash on items that they pick me to invest it on. I can’t aid however believe it’s a bit greedy at this point. What are your ideas on that?

Brett Molina:                   They definitely have the walled garden idea down to a tee, which is all their items clearly work effortlessly together. I keepinmind back in the day priorto I had purchased a Mac, I was on a PC and I was attempting to usage iTunes and attempting to do things with that and it was a big discomfort and it was not enjoyable. And it’s amusing how when you get all the Apple items, they work clearly so completely together. But yeah, if you even attempt to present something that’s non Apple it can be a headache. It’s not always the most smooth procedure.

It’s likewise intriguing too, duetothefactthat they’re actually huge on devices. They’re truly huge on adapters. I feel like they do actually well with adapters and things, like with the MacBook, for example, where they had coupleof reports on morerecent designs and how you had to buy the adapter simply to be able to usage things like a screen or anything else. And that was, onceagain, additional cash you had to pay.

You have the lightning cabletelevision things and we justrecently saw the EU talk about how they’re attempting to need a uniform charging cable for all portable gadgets, which is considerable since if that’s the case that modifications up a lot of what Apple does, since they’re quite much the just ones that have, or they’re one of the coupleof that have their own exclusive charging system with lightning. And that implies a lot of individuals in the EU with iPhones, iPads, whatever else, what do you do?

But onceagain, that gets back to now Apple can offer you another adapter, the adapter that enables you to charge with USBC and things like that. Obviously individuals with lightning ports, they’ll still be able to charge their phones and things like that so it’s not going to be an concern there. But it is going to be fascinating to see how this all modifications. And whether, onceagain, we get to a point where in the UnitedStates, do we see the verysame thing?

Because truthfully, I would love the concept of having one cable that charges whatever since it’s best. And onceagain, how lotsof individuals in their home have a drawer or someplace in their home with lots and lots of cables that are covered up in a ball or something else? I understand I have. I’m sure a lot of individuals do. And so the believed of that’s terrific, however onceagain, back to Apple. I feel like that’s constantly been their thing where it’s like you’re not simply purchasing the item, you’re purchasing that plus a handful of devices, since it’s got to work with this and work with something else. And yeah, it simply feels like a neverever ending cycle often.

James Brown:                  What is the Worldwide Developers Conference and why needto we care? How long has it been around?

Brett Molina:                   Oh, this hasactually been around for numerous years now. This is an yearly occasion that Apple hasactually hosted where they bring together designers from all throughout their various platforms. Obviously it began with the Mac and it’s because broadened. Obviously iPhone came out in ’07s, so we’ve seen the big community of designers and apps that hasactually developed. And then you have iPad. You have Apple Watch.

It’s actually simply a location for designers to get together, to talk, simply talk about Apple, app advancement, findout the brand-new tools that Apple’s going to present that will enable them to either make their apps muchbetter or possibly develop brand-new experiences.

It’s taken on significance of the last coupleof years amongst customers since Apple’s had this keynote where every year they’ve presented the mostcurrent iOS and they talk a lot about, ‘here’s what your phone’s going to appearance like in the fall. Here’s what your tablet’s going to appearance like in the fall.” Back early on when the iPhone veryfirst came out, we saw this simply remarkable consum
