The claim: Kamala Harris brought flowers to McCain monolith in Vietnam to honor his captors

A July 7 Facebook video (direct link, archive link) reveals Vice President Kamala Harris laying flowers at a memorial. A storyteller declares the memorial commemorates those who shot down a aircraft piloted by the late Sen. John McCain throughout the Vietnam War.

“What the know-nothing millennials who set Kamala’s schedule didn’t understand, is that the website that she’s laying those flowers at?” states the storyteller. “It’s a event of those who shot McCain’s aircraft out of the sky and then recorded him, providing him to the VC for his long stay and abuse at the Hanoi Hilton.”

The Facebook post’s caption asserts this was an deliberate choice by Harris: “You think it was a error however it wasn’t.” 

The post was shared over 2,000 times on Facebook.

Harris brought the flowers to the monolith to honor McCain, who she referred to as a “hero.” While the monolith might have atfirst been constructed to commemorate McCain’s 1967 capture, McCain admirers haveactually laid flowers at the monolith for years in a revealing of regard to the late senator, and a pejorative recommendation to McCain was dropped from the monolith in 2015.
